Muove i primi passi in un ambiente molto povero ed \u00e8 costretto ad<br \/>esercitare il mestiere di barbiere per sopravvivere. \u00c8 il fratello Nicola, scultore, ad avviarlo allo studio del disegno fino a quando, nel 1886, frequenta il Real Istituto delle Belle Arti di Napoli grazie ad un sussidio mensile del Comune di Venosa. I pittori paesaggisti Filippo Palizzi e Domenico Morelli, propugnatori della cosiddetta \u201cpittura di storia\u201d, furono i suoi maestri.<\/p><p>Dopo i primi anni di studi, magistralmente compiuti, si iscrive presso l\u2019Accademia di Roma, sempre sostenuto dall\u2019assegno comunale che gli consente di continuare<br \/>a perfezionare le proprie tecniche, finch\u00e9 non apre il suo primo atelier a Napoli. Il Buoso da Duera \u00e8 il capolavoro della rivelazione dechirichiana: il pittore era combattuto, fino ad allora, tra Neoclassicismo e Romanticismo, incerto tra l\u2019esaltazione degli ideali del passato e la raffigurazione della realt\u00e0 nella sua immediatezza.<\/p><p>Tra le due tendenze \u00e8 la prima a prevalere nel suo stile.
